Hyfrecator
While hyfrecators tend to be the ideal option for successful cauterization, the cords that connect its pencil to its unit break the sterile field and become entangled. This interferes with the doctor’s work and ultimately jeopardizes the safety of the patient. Not to mention, hyfrecator units are expensive.
Bovie single use electrocautery pens
On the contrary, single-use Bovie pens are wireless and do not pose the hazards that hyfrecators do. They are cheap and disposable with improved ergonomics. However, these pens either extensively burn tissue or are ineffective altogether.
This presents the opportunity to combine the hyfrecator’s effective hemostasis abilities with the Bovie pen’s ease of use to develop a portable, sterilizable, and reliable electrocautery pen.
